Inside the box

One object, several kinds of memory

Read it in English

While tidying a wardrobe, Lina finds a blue box. Inside are a postcard, a train ticket and a small seashell. She kept these objects as reminders of holidays at her grandparents’ home.

The card brings back a very clear memory: one Sunday, her grandfather had taught her to ride a bike. Back then, she was afraid of falling. Even today, she remembers his voice: “Look ahead!”

Lina has a good memory for faces, but often forgets dates. So she phones her sister to find out which year the card is from. Her sister laughs: “You collect keepsakes, and I remember dates!”

Before closing the box, Lina takes a photo of the shell. She is preparing a dissertation about family objects. She wants to explain how a very simple object can bring back a whole story.

For shared remembrance, use la mémoire collective. For a particular episode you tell a friend, use un souvenir. In en souvenir de, the object becomes a reminder of a person, place or occasion.
