Vouloir que + subjunctive: build French wishes with two subjects

Practise je veux que tu viennes, je voudrais que vous répondiez and same-subject infinitives. Twelve gaps with a short reference and clear cues.

In short

Use vouloir que or souhaiter que + another subject + subjunctive: Je veux que tu viennes. When you want to do the action yourself, use the infinitive: Je veux venir.

Je souhaite participer.souhaiter + infinitifI would like to take part.
Je souhaite que Léa participe.souhaiter que + sujet + subjonctifI would like Léa to take part.
Je voudrais que vous confirmiez la date.voudrais que + subjonctifI would like you to confirm the date.

English says “I want her to come”. French gives the second person a clause: Je veux qu’elle vienne. The elle belongs with vienne. Before a vowel, que becomes qu’: qu’elle, qu’il, qu’on. With nous, keep the whole word: que nous venions.

Does vouloir que take the subjunctive?

Je voudrais softens the opening. The second verb stays in the subjunctive.

Je voudrais que tu sois là demain.

I would like you to be there tomorrow.

Tomorrow still works with the present subjunctive

Demain gives the time; the wish expression selects the mood.

Je souhaite qu’elle puisse venir demain.

I hope she can come tomorrow.

Does espérer que take the subjunctive?

In an ordinary affirmative hope about tomorrow, espérer que takes the future indicative.

J’espère qu’elle viendra demain.

I hope she will come tomorrow.

Twelve gaps: write only the missing verb

Each bracket supplies the infinitive. In the first group, all six answers are present subjunctive forms of venir. In the second group, look at the person after que. The final pair switches between the subjunctive and an infinitive because the person doing the action changes.
