À force de: turn repeated actions into a result

Practise à force de with an infinitive or a noun, compare it with pour, and build sentences about persistence and unwanted results.

In short

À force de presents repeated or sustained action as leading to a result: À force d’essayer, elle a réussi. Use à force de + infinitive or noun. The result can be welcome or frustrating.

Was that the aim, or what eventually happened?

pour comprendrein order to understand

Focus: the aim of the action

pour + infinitive

Elle relit le passage pour comprendre l’argument.
She rereads the passage to understand the argument.

à force de relirethrough repeated rereading

Focus: the repeated action that leads to the result

à force de + infinitive

À force de relire le passage, elle a compris l’argument.
After rereading the passage repeatedly, she understood the argument.

In the second example, the understanding has happened. The first sentence gives her aim. In both, she is the person rereading. Keep that person as the subject when you combine two sentences: Nora essaie plusieurs fois. Nora réussit. → À force d’essayer, Nora réussit.

À force de vouloir satisfaire tout le monde, il a perdu de vue son objectif.

By constantly trying to please everyone, he lost sight of his objective.

The result is unwanted. The course reading uses this same kind of repeated compromise in a debate.

You will often meet finir par after this expression: À force de discuter, nous avons fini par trouver un accord. It means “eventually” or “end up”. Keep the infinitive after par: finir par trouver.

Complete the repeated action

Fill each gap with the infinitive in brackets. Then complete the connector and the noun phrase in the second part. Accents count.
