À peine… que: practise “had barely… when” with inversion

Build French statements with à peine… que, place the subject after the auxiliary and practise a short sequence of near-immediate events.

In short

À peine… que means “barely… when”: À peine avions-nous commencé que tout a changé. In formal writing, invert the subject and finite verb after initial à peine. The second clause keeps ordinary word order.

Study first: build the first clause
Ordinary statementInitial à peine
Nous avions commencé.À peine avions-nous commencé que…
Elle avait répondu.À peine avait-elle répondu que…
Nora avait terminé.À peine Nora avait-elle terminé que…
Les discussions étaient terminées.À peine les discussions étaient-elles terminées que…

With a compound tense, the auxiliary moves before the pronoun: avions-nous commencé. With a named subject, keep the name before the verb and add the matching pronoun: Nora avait-elle terminé. The hyphen joins the finite verb to the pronoun.

Three events, almost no breathing space

Une réunion mouvementée
  1. Nora

À peine avions-nous commencé que Paul a demandé une pause.

We had barely started when Paul asked for a break.

  2. Paul

À peine avais-je expliqué le problème que Lina a proposé une solution.

I had barely explained the problem when Lina suggested a solution.

  3. Lina

À peine avions-nous repris la discussion qu’une nouvelle question a surgi.

We had barely resumed the discussion when a new question came up.

Each line puts the first action in the plus-que-parfait and the next event in the passé composé. That pair suits this past account. In a lively present account, another frame is possible: À peine avons-nous commencé que Paul demande une pause.

Write only the missing inverted group

Keep the tense shown in each hint. The first part uses pronoun subjects; the second keeps a named subject and asks you to add its matching pronoun. Type the hyphens as part of your answer.

  2. À peine les discussions terminées qu’un autre débat a commencé. (les discussions étaient → add the matching pronoun)
  3. À peine le débat terminé qu’une nouvelle question a surgi. (le débat était → add the matching pronoun)

What does à peine mean with a number?

Nous avons à peine dix minutes.

We have barely ten minutes.

Here à peine modifies a quantity. The sentence is complete as it stands. Compare that with the two-event pattern you have practised, where que introduces what happens almost immediately afterwards.
