autoriserautoriser + personne + à + infinitifLa responsable autorise Nora à entrer.
permettrepermettre à + personne + de + infinitifLa responsable permet à Nora d’entrer.

The same permission can use either verb. With autoriser, Nora is a direct object. With permettre, à Nora is an indirect object. That changes the pronoun: elle l’autorise, but elle lui permet. Before a vowel, de becomes d’: d’entrer, d’utiliser.

Elle l’autorise à entrer. She authorises her to enter.

Focus: the person receives permission

Nora est autorisée à entrer.
Nora is authorised to enter.

Elle lui permet d’entrer. She allows her to enter.

Focus: the same permission with an indirect-object pronoun

Elle permet à Nora d’utiliser la salle.
She allows Nora to use the room.

What is the difference between autoriser and permettre?

Permission and practical means

La responsable m’autorise à entrer. Mon badge me permet d’ouvrir la porte.

The manager authorises me to enter. My badge lets me open the door.

The first sentence gives permission. The second explains how opening the door becomes possible. Permettre covers both relationships. Ask what the subject contributes: permission from a person, or a practical means such as a map or a key.
