Can j’ai été mean “I went” in French?
- Maya
J’ai été à Lyon la semaine dernière.
I was in Lyon last week.
- Hugo
Tu y es allée pour le travail ?
Did you go there for work?
- Maya
Non, je suis allée voir ma sœur. Je suis rentrée dimanche.
No, I went to see my sister. I came back on Sunday.
Maya uses j’ai été to report her visit and je suis allée to describe going to see her sister. Both fit. Her return is made explicit by je suis rentrée dimanche. French elle est allée alone leaves the return to context; English “has been” and “has gone” are poor word-for-word shortcuts here.
