In short
In il a dit qu’il viendrait, the coming is future from the past moment of speaking: “he said he would come”. Use the future stem with -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. The exercises below keep that past viewpoint throughout.

What is the future in the past in French?
Lundi, Léa a dit : « Je viendrai mardi. » → Léa a dit qu’elle viendrait mardi.
On Monday, Léa said, “I will come on Tuesday.” → Léa said that she would come on Tuesday.
Monday: the statement. Tuesday: the later action it looks forward to.
| Direct words | Past report |
|---|---|
| « Je serai disponible. » | Elle a dit qu’elle serait disponible. |
| « Nous aurons une réponse. » | Ils ont annoncé qu’ils auraient une réponse. |
| « Je viendrai. » | Il a promis qu’il viendrait. |
The form is called conditionnel présent, but here it organises time. “He promised he would come” reports a promise; the eventual visit remains open. By comparison, il viendrait s’il était libre expresses a hypothetical result with an explicit condition.
How do time words change in French reported speech?
Lundi : « Je viendrai demain. » → Vendredi : Elle a dit qu’elle viendrait le lendemain.
Monday: “I will come tomorrow.” → Friday: She said that she would come the following day.
Both versions point to Tuesday. On Friday, demain would point to Saturday.
A future can stay in a past report when the speaker keeps a current viewpoint: elle m’a dit qu’elle viendra demain. These drills explicitly request a past viewpoint, so use the conditional. In part 1, keep the stated subject; in part 2, use the reporting sentence’s subject.
1 · 1 · Change the future to the conditional; keep the subject
- je viendrai → je
- tu pourras → tu
- elle fera → elle
- nous serons → nous
- vous aurez → vous
- ils partiront → ils
2 · 2 · Report each statement from the past viewpoint; final row addresses the whole group
