L’approximation · fiche
1 · Before a number: both work
Put either expression before the amount. The number is an estimate.

Il y a à peu près vingt personnes. There are about twenty people.
2 · After a number: environ works too
Keep the number and its unit together, then add environ.

| vingt minutes environ | about twenty minutes |
Le trajet dure vingt minutes environ. The journey takes about twenty minutes.
3 · A duration and a clock time answer different questions
Combien de temps ? asks how long. À quelle heure ? asks at what time.
Le trajet dure environ une heure. The journey takes about an hour.
On se retrouve vers dix heures. We’ll meet at around ten.
4 · A future wait: dans + approximate duration

Elle arrivera dans environ une heure. She’ll arrive in about an hour.
Elle arrivera dans à peu près une heure. She’ll arrive in about an hour.
