In short
Un exemple illustrates an idea; un modèle gives you a pattern to follow. A sentence can do both: it shows how French works and gives you a structure to reuse. Both nouns are masculine: cet exemple, ce modèle.

This letter template begins with a greeting.
What is the difference between exemple and modèle?
Tu es libre samedi ?
Are you free on Saturday?
This is un exemple d’invitation: one sentence shows how to invite someone.
Salut Léa ! Je suis ton nouveau voisin. Tu es libre samedi pour une promenade ? À bientôt !
Hi Léa! I’m your new neighbour. Are you free for a walk on Saturday? See you soon!
This is un modèle de message: greeting, introduction, invitation and closing. You can reuse the structure with a different name, day and activity.

Nora wants to write to her new neighbour. During the French lesson, the teacher says: “Here is an example or model of a first message.”
The text starts with “Hi!” and ends with “See you soon!” Nora uses this model to organise her message. She changes the first name, day and activity.
The teacher also gives this example of an invitation: “Are you free on Sunday?” Nora suggests another activity, for example a walk.
She writes her message based on the structure of the text they studied. Her neighbour replies: “Yes, I’d love to!” Nora understands that the same sentence can serve as an example and a model.
