Éviter or empêcher? Practise “avoid doing” and “stop someone doing”

Build French sentences with éviter de and empêcher quelqu’un de. Study the patterns, then complete ten gaps about repetition, interruptions and checking sources.

In short

Use éviter de faire when the subject avoids doing something: J’évite de répéter. Use empêcher quelqu’un de faire when something stops a person from acting: Le bruit m’empêche de travailler. Both verbs can also describe preventing a problem.

What is the difference between éviter and empêcher?

Cette vérification permet d’éviter une erreur.

This check helps prevent a mistake.

Here, English “prevent” fits éviter. The object is the unwanted outcome.

Le filtre empêche les messages indésirables d’arriver dans ma boîte de réception.

The filter stops unwanted messages reaching my inbox.

Les messages indésirables are what the filter blocks. After them, de becomes d’ before a vowel.

The object tells you which construction to use. In J’évite Nora, I keep away from Nora. In J’empêche Nora de parler, I stop Nora speaking. And Je relis pour éviter une erreur gives my aim: the phrase pour éviter alone says why I reread.
