Four things from the departure

How do you say “almost” with avoir failli?

The auxiliary changes with the subject
SubjectNear-eventEnglish
jej’ai failli oublierI almost forgot
elleelle a failli tombershe nearly fell
nousnous avons failli partirwe almost left
elleselles ont failli rirethey nearly laughed

Keep failli unchanged with these subjects. The following action is an infinitive: tomber, partir, rire. The spelling tombé belongs in a different construction, such as il est tombé.

J’ai failli ne pas te reconnaître, puis j’ai entendu ta voix.

I almost failed to recognise you, then I heard your voice.

The near-event is the whole phrase ne pas te reconnaître. Here the speaker eventually recognises the other person.
