1 · 1 · Ask how often with à quelle fréquence
Use a frequency question when you want the repeating pattern. Combien de fois par semaine… ? asks specifically for the number each week.
À quelle fréquence avez-vous cours ?How often do you have lessons?
Combien de fois par semaine avez-vous cours ?How many times a week do you have lessons?
2 · 2 · Count occurrences with fois par
Use a number + fois par + a singular period. Fois has the same spelling after one or several occurrences.

J’ai cours une fois par semaine.I have a lesson once a week.
Nous faisons le point deux fois par mois.We review things twice a month.
3 · 3 · Give a fixed interval with tous les
Use tous les + number + plural masculine time unit. Count the days between occurrences: Monday to Wednesday is two days.
Le groupe se réunit tous les deux jours.The group meets every other day.
La réunion a lieu tous les trois mois.The meeting takes place every three months.
4 · 4 · Use toutes les with a feminine time unit
The form agrees with the time unit: toutes les deux semaines, toutes les trois heures. The plural belongs to the repeating interval.
Nous nous retrouvons toutes les deux semaines.We meet every two weeks.
Le tableau est mis à jour toutes les deux heures.The table is updated every two hours.
5 · 5 · Name a regular weekday
Le lundi and tous les lundis can both describe a Monday routine. Lundi, with no article, can refer to one Monday established by the context.
Je joue au tennis le lundi.I play tennis on Mondays.
Je joue au tennis tous les lundis.I play tennis every Monday.
6 · 6 · Separate twice a week from every two weeks
The position of deux changes the meaning: before fois it counts occasions; before semaines it counts weeks in the interval.
Je participe à deux séances par semaine.I attend two sessions a week.
Je participe à une séance toutes les deux semaines.I attend one session every two weeks.
7 · 7 · A count leaves room for different gaps
Two events per week could fall on Monday and Tuesday or Monday and Thursday. A fixed two-day interval continues across the end of the week.
J’ai cours deux fois par semaine, le lundi et le jeudi.I have lessons twice a week, on Monday and Thursday.
Nous nous réunissons tous les deux jours : lundi, mercredi, vendredi, dimanche, puis mardi.We meet every other day: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday, then Tuesday.
