Ce livre, je l’aime: practise French left and right dislocation

Move a French topic to the start or end of a sentence, keep its referring pronoun, and practise le, la, les, en and y in context.

In short

Left dislocation names the topic first: Ce livre, je l’aime. Right dislocation names it last: Je l’aime, ce livre. A pronoun inside the statement refers to the detached topic.

The topic is what the sentence is about; it need not be the subject. In Cette langue, nous la parlons à la maison, nous does the speaking and la refers to the language. The comma marks the detached phrase in writing; speech uses a pause or a change in intonation.

What is dislocation in French?

  • Direct object: Je connais cette personne → Cette personne, je la connais.
  • Complement with de: Je parle de ce changement → Ce changement, j’en parle.
  • Place: Je retourne dans cette ville → Cette ville, j’y retourne.
  • Subject: Mes parents habitent ici → Mes parents, ils habitent ici.

These patterns are common in conversation. A plain sentence such as Je connais cette personne is also useful in a short written message. When two possible topics have the same gender, name the one you mean: La nouvelle collègue, je la connais gives a clearer reference than Elle, je la connais on its own.

  4. Cette ville, tu retournes demain. (retourner dans cette ville)

2 · Topic last: keep the statement complete

  1. Elle comprend bien, ce problème. (comprendre ce problème)
  2. Ils parlent souvent, de ce changement. (parler de ce changement)
  3. Nous habitons depuis dix ans, dans ce quartier. (habiter dans ce quartier)
