French translation practice: choose the word that keeps the meaning

Translate eight short messages into French. Check hope, expectation, learning, teaching and reporting, with explanations for every answer.

In short

Choose the French verb for the action you mean, then check who does it and what follows it. “I hope” gives j’espère; “I expect” can give je m’attends à. A natural sentence keeps the original attitude as well as the main event.

In the questions below, choose the sentence that says the same thing as the English cue. A distractor may be correct French but describe a different action. Read the object and any pronoun before you decide: je lui explique means I explain to that person, while il m’explique makes that person the speaker.

  2. Question 2No account needed
    “I expect a difficult discussion.”

    Choose one answer.

    Answer and explanation

Je m’attends à une discussion difficile.. S’attendre à expresses an expectation; espérer would make the difficult discussion a desired outcome.

  3. Question 3No account needed
“My sister is teaching me to explain the rules.”

    Choose one answer.

    Answer and explanation

  4. Question 4No account needed

“She specifies that the answer is optional.”

    Choose one answer.

    Answer and explanation

Elle précise que la réponse est facultative.. Préciser que introduces the detail being supplied. Correcting or accepting answers describes another action.
