Je vous écoute or je vous entends: listening, hearing and replying

Use je vous écoute to invite someone to speak and je vous entends to confirm sound. Compare three common mix-ups and practise a short French phone call.

In short

Je vous écoute means “I’m listening” and gives someone your attention or a turn to speak. Je vous entends means “I can hear you” in a sound check. In a discussion, Je vous entends can also mean “I hear your point”; the next sentence gives your response.

Both verbs take the person directly: écouter quelqu’un, entendre quelqu’un. The object pronoun comes before the verb: je vous écoute, je t’entends. English adds “to” in “listen to you”, but French uses écouter directly. Keep the accent in écoute and the final -s in entends.
