Régler or résoudre? Bills, settings and problems in French

Use régler for bills and settings, résoudre for puzzles, and either for many problems. Keep this compact reference and test the patterns in context.

In short

Use régler to pay a bill or adjust a setting, and résoudre to solve a puzzle or problem. With un problème, both verbs can work: régler often sounds like “sort out”, while résoudre highlights finding a solution.

The object is the bill to be paid. Payer is another everyday choice.

A practical problem can be réglé or résolu. The surrounding sentence explains the solution.
