The object after the verb sets the scale. Remplacer l’ampoule replaces the bulb; remplacer la lampe replaces the whole lamp. A replacement can also be second-hand: J’ai remplacé ma chaise par une chaise d’occasion. The verb describes substitution, while d’occasion tells you about the replacement’s condition.
