Read it in English

On Friday, Léa and Mehdi are meeting in front of the station at six. They are then going to a concert with Ana. Léa comes by bike. She puts her helmet on her bag and checks the time. She is a little early.

At exactly six, Ana shows up with two festival programmes. “Hi! Is Mehdi here already?” she asks. Léa shows her a message: “My tram is stuck. I’ll be there in ten minutes.” Ana laughs: “For once I’m on time, and he’s the one we’re waiting for!”

Mehdi arrives at ten past six. He apologises and explains the tram problem. Léa says: “We can still walk there; the venue is just behind the station.” Mehdi looks for the tickets on his phone. He can’t manage to open the file. Ana shows him hers: she has saved all three tickets.

The next day, Léa tells her sister about the evening: “Ana showed up right on time, and Mehdi was ten minutes late. Luckily, we saw the start of the concert!”

Both arrival verbs use être in these past sentences. The participle agrees with the subject: pointée, arrivée for Ana; pointé, arrivé for Mehdi. In the phone problem, n’arrive pas à ouvrir describes difficulty doing something. Replacing it with se pointer would lose that meaning.
