How do you conjugate valoir?
| Job | Stem | Example |
|---|---|---|
| present plural and imparfait | val- | nous valons → nous valions |
| future and conditional | vaudr- | il vaudra → il vaudrait |
| subjunctive singular and third-person plural | vaill- | que cela vaille → qu’ils vaillent |
In the subjunctive, nous and vous return to val- rather than vaill-: que nous valions, que vous valiez. The future has d, giving vaudra; the conditional keeps that whole stem and changes the ending to vaudrait. The short present pair is je vaux / il vaut.
What does il vaut mieux mean?
Il vaut mieux attendre.
It’s better to wait.
Use an infinitive when you give the action directly.
Il vaut mieux que tu attendes.
It’s better for you to wait.
Name the person with que + subject + subjunctive.
Il vaudrait mieux que nous attendions.
It would be better for us to wait.
For an effort that is worthwhile, use valoir la peine: cela vaut la peine d’essayer. The imperative forms are rare and sound like an exhortation, as in the table. In everyday recommendations, il vaut mieux and il vaudrait mieux are more useful.
