In short

Victor Hugo (1802–1885) was the giant of French Romanticism: poet, playwright, novelist (Notre-Dame de Paris, Les Misérables) and politician. Opposed to Napoleon III, he lived 19 years in exile on Jersey and Guernsey, and two million people followed his funeral.

Hugo's novels shaped how France sees itself: Notre-Dame de Paris (1831) helped save the cathedral from demolition, and Les Misérables made the poor of Paris the heroes of a national epic. His poem Demain, dès l'aube, written for Léopoldine, is learned by heart in French schools.

« Demain, dès l'aube, à l'heure où blanchit la campagne, je partirai. »

"Tomorrow, at dawn, at the hour when the countryside whitens, I will leave."
