Why can’t you say demander une question?

  • demanderautomatically “to demand”to ask or request

Je voudrais vous demander un renseignement.I’d like to ask you for some information.

For a forceful demand, use exiger: Il exige une réponse immédiate.

  • poser une questionfaire une questionto ask a question

Est-ce que je peux vous poser une question ?Can I ask you a question?

Keep poser with the noun question. With a question word, use demander: Je demande quand le cours commence.

  • demander un renseignementdemander pour un renseignementto ask for some information

Elle demande un renseignement à l’accueil. She asks for information at reception.

The information follows demander directly. The person follows à: à la secrétaire.

One call, three requests

Un appel au secrétariat
  1. Nora

Bonjour, je voudrais vous demander un renseignement.

Hello, I’d like to ask you for some information.

  2. Secrétaire

    Bien sûr, je vous écoute.

    Of course, go ahead.

  3. Nora

Est-ce que je peux poser une question à la responsable ?

Can I ask the manager a question?

  4. Secrétaire

    Elle est en réunion.

    She’s in a meeting.

  5. Nora

Pouvez-vous lui demander de me rappeler ?

Can you ask her to call me back?

  6. Secrétaire

Oui, je lui transmets votre demande.

Yes, I’ll pass on your request.

In the last request, lui means “to her”. It replaces à la responsable. The same lui can mean “to him”: Je demande à Paul de rappeler → Je lui demande de rappeler. With several people, use leur: Je leur demande de rappeler.

Compare Je demande à parler à la responsable (“I ask to speak to the manager”). Here the speaker wants to speak. In Je demande à la responsable de rappeler, the manager is the person asked to act.
