Develop a reason in French: go beyond parce que c’est mieux

Build a French reason from a specific benefit, an explanation and a condition. Compare a worked paragraph, then complete six short writing drills.

In short

Replace ce serait mieux with the benefit and the step that produces it. For smaller workshop groups: fewer participants share the discussion time, so the facilitator could give each person more attention. À durée égale states the condition behind that comparison.

Study first: turn a judgement into a reason

Group sizes should be reduced because that would be better.

The reader still needs to know what would improve.

Group sizes should be reduced to allow more focused discussion. With sessions of equal length, fewer participants would share the same discussion time. The facilitator could therefore spend more time on each person’s questions.

The first sentence chooses one benefit: discussion. The second explains the sharing of a fixed amount of time. The third brings that explanation back to the facilitator’s work. The paragraph now has a reason the reader can follow and examine.

Complete the reasoning

Use the cue in each gap. The first four practise the workshop argument. The last two transfer the same pattern to sending an agenda before a meeting. Keep the conditional endings: these sentences describe a proposed change and its expected effect.

1 · A benefit, a mechanism and a condition

(égal · agree with durée)
(consacrer · after pouvoir)
  4. Les participants plus souvent la parole. (avoir · conditionnel présent)

2 · Transfer the pattern to meeting preparation

(one word meaning in this way)

How do you develop a reason in French writing?

The paragraph about group size follows one thread: time for questions. Costs, transport and room comfort could support other arguments. Choose one of those for a separate paragraph if it matters to your task. Adding another benefit halfway through would leave the shared-time explanation unfinished.
