French tenancy checkout dialogue: discuss an inventory disagreement

Discuss a disputed scratch during a French tenancy checkout. Practise comparing entry notes and photographs and asking for the disagreement to be recorded.

In short

Point to the exact item: Je ne suis pas d’accord avec la mention « rayure nouvelle ». Refer to the entry inventory and a dated photograph, then ask Pouvons-nous noter nos deux observations ? Keep the description and the unresolved disagreement clear.

How do you discuss an inventory dispute in French?

At the departure inspection, the landlord describes a scratch as new. The tenant brings the entry inventory and photographs. Practise referring to those documents while keeping the conversation focused on one mark.

Your lines are hidden in practice mode. Say them aloud, then reveal to compare.
  1. Bailleur

    English

For the living-room parquet, I’m noting a new scratch near the window.

  2. Locataire

Disagree with “new” and say the scratch was already there on arrival.

    English

I disagree with the word “new”. That scratch was already there when I moved in.

  3. Bailleur

    English

The entry inventory only says “a few marks near the window”.

  4. Locataire

Oui.

Connect the description to the location and mention your arrival-day photo.

    English

Yes. That description refers to this area. I also have a photo taken on the day I received the keys.

  5. Bailleur

Vous pouvez me la montrer ?

    English

Can you show it to me?

  6. Locataire

Show the photo and locate the scratch to the left of the radiator.

    English

Of course. You can see the same scratch, just to the left of the radiator.

  7. Bailleur

La photo est assez sombre. La rayure semble plus longue aujourd’hui.

    English

The photo is quite dark. The scratch seems longer today.

  8. Locataire

Acknowledge the point and offer a clearer second photo.

    English

I understand your point. Let’s look at the second photo: you can see both ends more clearly.

  9. Bailleur

Celle-ci est plus nette. Elle date bien de votre arrivée ?

    English

This one is clearer. Does it date from when you moved in?

  10. Locataire

Oui.

Refer to the email you sent that day and show its date.

    English

Yes. I emailed it to you that day. Here is the message with the date.

  11. Bailleur

    English

I see. I still think it looks longer, but I’ll note your observation.

  12. Locataire

Ask to record the original scratch and the disagreement about any change.

    English

Could we write that the scratch was present at entry and that we disagree about how it has changed?

  13. Bailleur

Oui.

    English

Yes. I’ll also add that you showed two photos and the dated email.

  14. Locataire

Merci.

Ask to attach the photos so both parties use the same reference.

    English

Thank you. Could we attach those photos to the document so we have the same reference?

  15. Bailleur

D’accord.

    English

All right. We’ll then check the description and photos together.

  16. Locataire

Ask for details if the landlord proposes a deduction.

    English

If you propose a deduction, could you send me the details?

  17. Bailleur

    English

I’ll send you the breakdown after reviewing the documents. No amount is settled today.

  18. Locataire

Ask to reread the observations and receive a copy with the photos.

    English

Very good. Let’s reread our observations before finishing, then please send me a copy with the photos.
