In short
Read the whole scene before deciding what happened. Je pars demain has a present form with future reference; il aura oublié can offer a guess about the past. An intention, an attempt and a completed result tell you different things.

| Look for | Ask yourself | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Which tense is actually written? | Nous partons samedi. |
| Reference | When does the scene happen? | Hier, tout commence à huit heures. |
| Viewpoint | Is the speaker guessing or stating a plan? | Il sera sans doute déjà chez lui. |
| Outcome | Is the action achieved, attempted or still projected? | Elle essaie de comprendre. |
Choose the interpretation supported by each complete sentence. Some questions ask for the written form; others ask what the speaker means or what result is stated. Treat each instruction as a separate question, even when the same verb appears twice.
Can one French verb form have two readings?
A deadline anchors a future completion; an explanation for a missing reply can turn the same future-perfect form into a conjecture. To make your own meaning clear, add a time phrase such as demain à midi or a reason such as il n’a pas répondu. The surrounding words give the reader the scene.
