Why are the endings of attendre silent?

The present singular forms attends, attends and attend sound alike. Write -s for je and tu, and keep the bare stem for il, elle and on. In ils attendent, the ending -ent is silent, but the stem’s final d is heard. Before a vowel, je becomes j’: j’attends, j’attendais, j’attendrai.

attendre quelqu’un / quelque choseto wait for someone / something

Focus: the person or thing expected

Nous attendons la technicienne.
We are waiting for the technician.

attendre pendant vingt minutesto wait for twenty minutes

Focus: the length of the wait

Nous avons attendu pendant vingt minutes.
We waited for twenty minutes.

English “for” has two jobs here. The expected person or thing takes no preposition after attendre. A duration can use pendant, or simply the number of minutes: j’ai attendu vingt minutes. To tell someone to wait for you, say Attends-moi ! or Attendez-moi !.

  • J’attends pour le bus.J’attends le bus.
