Read it in English
On Monday morning, Inès and Paul got into the lift on the ground floor. At first, everything was fine. But between the third and fourth floors, the lift suddenly stopped.
Paul pressed all the buttons. Nothing! Then Inès rang the alarm. A voice answered: "Stay calm, a technician is coming."
They waited a long time. Inès sat down on the floor and Paul told jokes.
After forty minutes, the lift started again. Finally, they got out on the fourth floor… just in time for the meeting!
Why these answers
- Monter, repartir, sortir are movement verbs: être, with agreement (sont montés, sont sortis).
- S'arrêter and s'asseoir are pronominal: être (s'est arrêté, s'est assise).
- Appuyer, sonner, répondre, attendre, raconter take avoir, no agreement with the subject.
- Au bout de + duration means "after".
Time markers keep a story clear: d'abord (first), ensuite / puis (then), au bout de + duration (after), finalement / enfin (finally), and soudain or tout à coup (suddenly) for the surprise.
