Verb drill

Active to passive in French: a transformation drill

Keep the tense, agent and negative meaning as you turn French active sentences into passive ones. Study three models, then complete eight transformations.

In short

Make the direct object the new subject, put être in the original tense, and agree the past participle with that new subject. Keep the actor with par: Nora a envoyé les invitations → Les invitations ont été envoyées par Nora.

PresentNora vérifie la réponse.La réponse est vérifiée par Nora.
Passé composéNora a vérifié la réponse.La réponse a été vérifiée par Nora.
FutureNora vérifiera les réponses.Les réponses seront vérifiées par Nora.

Keep the small words that carry the facts

Nora n’a pas envoyé les invitations hier.Nora did not send the invitations yesterday.

Focus: The sending yesterday is denied

ne + auxiliary + pas

Les invitations n’ont pas été envoyées hier par Nora.
The invitations were not sent yesterday by Nora.

Nora n’a envoyé que deux invitations.Nora sent only two invitations.

Focus: The quantity is limited to two

seules deux + passive

Seules deux invitations ont été envoyées par Nora.
Only two invitations were sent by Nora.

For this drill, keep every named agent. Les invitations ont été envoyées is a complete passive, but par Nora keeps the sender visible. The participle follows invitations: feminine plural gives envoyées. Nora’s gender plays no part in that ending.

Which French verbs can be made passive?

Nora parle aux participants.

Nora speaks to the participants.

Parler à takes an indirect object. This is a good sentence to keep active.

A direct object can become the passive subject in these transformations: examiner les propositions, envoyer la réponse, modifier les règles. With parler aux participants, aux participants begins with à. The English wording “speak to” is a useful reminder to check the French preposition before moving anything.
