S’avérer or se révéler: practise how something turns out

Compare s’avérer utile, se révéler difficile and révéler une erreur. Complete a short report with eight gaps and check accents and past agreement.

In short

S’avérer and se révéler both mean “to turn out to be” before a quality: Le travail s’avère difficile / se révèle difficile. Se révéler also describes an ability becoming apparent. Keep the pronoun: révéler une erreur, with no se, means reveal an error.

With these two pronominal verbs, the past participle agrees with the subject: avérée for la méthode, révélés for les résultats. Notice the accents: avérer → avère, révéler → révèle. Before est, se becomes s’. The adjective also agrees: une méthode utile, des méthodes utiles.

What is the difference between s’avérer and se révéler?

Au début, le résumé semble complet. Après comparaison avec le texte, il se révèle incomplet : la conclusion manque.

At first, the summary seems complete. After comparison with the text, it turns out to be incomplete: the conclusion is missing.

Semble gives the first impression. Se révèle introduces what the check brings to light.

The two “turn out” verbs overlap in many adjective phrases. The gap cues below name the verb to conjugate, so the task is about forms and agreement. Fill each blank with the whole verb group, including its pronoun and, in the past, its auxiliary. Leave the adjective already printed after the gap in place.

Read it in English

At first, the comparison turns out to be simple. The summary seems complete. Yet two checks prove necessary. The first reveals a difference between the dates.

Nora goes back to both versions. The second reading turns out to take longer than expected. The details prove important: a date is missing and a conclusion has been shortened.

At the end of the day, Nora takes stock. The comparison proved useful. The corrections turned out to be essential. Her colleague Hugo proved very attentive to detail.
